Season 30: Specials. Round 2: Indianapolis 60 laps (69x F1 cars)

On to round 2 at Indy.  A reasonably good turnout for our race, and qualifying went fairly well.  Surprising speed from Greg put him out of reach, but late in the session I got a good tow from Axel and went 3rd fastest, after towing him to second fastest!!  Car feels great without any fuel in it :)  This race rules say that us works drivers have to do two pitstops in this race, one for fuel and one is a stop + go.  Light drivers don't have to do a stop + go.

Start rules were to do a pace lap behind the leader, single file, and then go in the apex of turn 4.  My start was Ok. I over-revved my engine off the line which made me wince but no damage done.  Greg pitted on lap 2 from the lead in order to get his stop and go out of the way early.  I'd gotten past Axel after he'd run wide on lap 1 to chase Greg, so that left me in the lead.  I did think briefly about following him in but decided to stick to my game plan.  I figured the smartest play would be to stop at half distance for fuel, then stop again the next lap for the stop + go - since that should minimise the amount of damage a pitstop will do to the overall race pace.  The biggest concern for me about getting the stop + go done early is that it leaves you vulnerable to not being able to make your way back through the field because cars you pass could just sit behind you in the draft, pass you back and slow you up.

Axel got back past me lap 2 so I let him lead.  I was all about looking after my right rear tyre.  Axel looked to be struggling, sideways a lot and surely burning his right rear.  I sat behind him patient to wait it out.  Gebhart ran 2nd ahead of me for a while then dropped back.  I watched Greg on the Prib readout.  I could see him catching cars and passing them instead of getting stuck in battles with them.  That's about when I knew I was in trouble.  A long period then of just waiting, droning around behind Axel, looking after my tyres and watching Greg get closer

Finally Axel pitted lap 20 and I took over.  We had picked up Doni when we lapped him, and he sat behind me for several more laps.   I had an eye on my fuel, intending to pit when it was low.  Greg pitted again on halfway but I still had 3 or so laps of fuel so stayed out figuring I'd be quicker.

I caught Jani to lap him for the 2nd time.  I went past on the inside into turn 3 and didn't slow up enough.  The result was a massive spike in temperature in the right front tyre.  Now I was in trouble.  The tyre wouldn't cool down and I started battling with understeer into turn 1 and turn 3. I actually bumped the wall once struggling with the car.  Finally it was time to pit.  I knew from testing I should not spin the tyres exiting the box because it would overheat the rears, but in this situation I figured that would fix the problem with the fronts.  So a good pitstop and spun the tyres up nicely, roared out then came in again next lap to do my stop + go.  While in the pits I heard Greg go past.  So as I exited the pits he was 12 seconds ahead, and that basically was that.  As least the fix had worked and I didn't have any more understeer to deal with, the car was nice and balanced all the way to the end, but Greg was a few tenths a lap quicker than me anyway so all I could do is run to the flag for 2nd.  I think Greg gambled a little with his tactics, but him in that Lotus was wicked fast.

Testing Notes from Indianapolis

Indy seems like an easy track, but once you get into it you find it isn't, it's actually quite difficult to find the right lines through each of the four corners, and have the car sorted out to give the best speed possible.  I haven't spent a lot of time here in the past but I did at least have a rough setup to start with from some past fun races.  I would prefer to run the Ferrari as I suspect the V12 engine would give a higher speed than the DFVs, but I know the Matra MS80, and after all these years the car just suits me.  Not only is this a race with the 69x F1 cars, but also this race will be done with the new pitstop patch which allows proper pitstops for fuel only to be done, so that has to be installed and tested.  Thankfully it works well, as long as you remember to raise the drivers arm when you stop bang on your pit board to start the process.

Anyway, the important thing is the setup, and adding tyre pressure gives a small bump of speed but also less grip.  A lot of time has been spent getting the car to run through the corner with the minimum amount of wheel angle.  Less angle results in less scrub which looks after the tyres.  It takes about 5 laps or so to get the tyres into their proper temperature range so each setting change takes a lot of patience to then properly evaluate.  In the end I got to a car which certainly feels very fast, turns into the corners with a lot of speed, and has a good balance on the front right and rear right tyre.  At the moment we seem to evolve from a neutral balance to a slight understeer in midcorner after 5 or so laps, which then evolves to a more loose oversteery balance - even perhaps needing a small lift before the apex to keep the rear calm.

The main issue I think will be having a car that can keep up with the lead draft, allow different lines through the corners, and stays stable at draft-influenced speeds into turn 1 and 3.  Staying calm will be crucial.

Restaurant - Casa Nostra

Really nice Italian styled restaurant, nice tables and interesting stuff on the walls.  A Sicilian Red wine (Nero d'Avola) was beautifully flavoured and went down a treat.  Gorgeous appetizers of rough garlic bread and Sicilian olives, almonds and breadsticks then gave way to a delicious main course of Putenesca with Spaghetti and an unbelievable Pesto and Chicken pizza.

I'm reliably informed the Putenesca was, and I quote "Mmmmmmm".  The Pizza for me was likely the best Pizza I've ever had: crisp and savoury.  No possibility of finishing either meal but it's ok, they let us take the leftovers home for the next day!  The only real problem was the night club next door that started playing stupid music through the walls, but the friendly staff let us move tables to escape the worst of it.  Recommended!

Season 30: Specials. Round 1: Targa Florio (67 GT cars)

Season begins at the mighty Targa racetrack.  72 miles of tight twisty action in Sicily.  Qualifying started at 07:30 local time, and I was up and running by about 07:45 after having some trouble with sound issues on my computer necessitating in another restart.

Qualifying:  Didn't go too smoothly.  Had Greg about a minute behind me which added to pressure, then in 4th quarter of lap I hit a fence a bit too hard and bent something in the front right.  The car wouldn't turn left after that with massive understeer everywhere and Greg closed right up.  Down the long straight at the end of the lap he went past, I tried to follow him but had to nurse the car home.  Qualified 3rd.

Race: Ok start, followed Axel in his 2F but something went wrong in about turn 4 and the car slid onto the grass.  I then got hit by another car which put me onto the fence.  Had to wait and do a reset - which meant I had used up my one reset at the start.  Went off again, caught Axel when he spun, accidentally bumped him when going past.  Caught Dean and got past him eventually when he went a bit wide, then got on with trying to drive very precisely but carefully.  No catching Greg today, just too fast.  Axel chased me all the way home, staying about 10 seconds behind all the time.  Car felt good mostly, just not confident enough in this mad track.  Very glad to get out with 2nd place points to start the season!!
